The long-awaited Highlander reboot starring Henry Cavill reportedly now has a release window, with Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake revealing during a recent investor call that the movie is aiming to hit theaters in 2026 (via Comicbook.com). Fans of the Highlander saga have been waiting quite some time for the return of the franchise, and while 2026 is a few years away, the news is no less exciting.
Both the writers’ and actors’ strikes have now come to an end, with Hollywood going into overdrive in order to get things at least somewhat back on track. It is currently unknown when the Highlander reboot will go into production, or when Cavill will have time to lead the project, but with a release date now on the calendar, it certainly sounds like the highly anticipated movie is happening at last.
The original Highlander was released way back in 1986 and follows swordsman Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert). MacLeod discovers that he is one of a number of immortal warriors who can be killed only by beheading. After living somewhat peacefully for several centuries, MacLeod settles in New York City and is soon dragged back onto the battlefield when his greatest enemy returns to kill him and thus obtain "the Prize" — a special ability that is given to the last living immortal warrior.
The reboot has been in the works for years, and was finally confirmed last month. John Wick director Chad Stahelski will be at the helm, with The Witcher’s Henry Cavill taking on the role of Connor MacLeod. While further details remain unknown, Stahelski has said the movie will be “akin to John Wick with swords.”

One thing we do know is that the Highlander reboot will maintain the beloved music of Queen, with Stahelski recently revealing that such powerful ballads as Who Wants To Live Forever will be included.
“Yes. Probably in a different way than you think, but hardcore yes.”
The filmmaker has also revealed that this first Highlander movie will hopefully be the beginning of a new franchise (via the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast).
"I'll say it for you first, our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that, but we've also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we're trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to The Gathering, so we have room to grow the property."
And the director cannot wait to explore the “rich, rich, rich mythology” and tell tales of immortals from all corners of the globe.
"Highlander, I can tell you right now, if we've got our sh-t together and pull off a feature, we've got ideas for days about how to make the coolest characters and make that an epic TV show. I just think that's a rich, rich, rich mythology. You can pick any period in time, any nationality, any culture, any type of person and make them an immortal that have to duel and deal with the burden of immortality? That's f-cking cool to me."
